BARBIZON GRAD TO BECOME A JOURNALIST
After Katie Mullins' selection as editor of the Palmetto High School newspaper, Tiger Times, the publication received a complete makeover.
Not surprising, since the 17-year-old senior has a love of writing, scoring 100 percent on the writing section of the FCAT in her sophomore year. She is headed to the University of Florida to major in journalism.
Writing is not Katie's sole point of interest at Palmetto High. She also is a member of the school's JROTC unit, directed by Col. Pete Massman.
Now, with the award-winning unit for four years, Katie has seen them judged best in Manatee County, winning every match with other local schools. The unit consists of separate groups, the Raiders, Rifle and Drill.
Along the way, Katie developed self-confidence and personal awareness through graduating from the Barbizon School of Modeling in Tampa and participating in a number of area pageants. Pageants are now out, though, as each one seems to get a bit stricter as to gown and hairstyle, makeup and such, removing the fun of the competition, she said.
Later this month, Katie will graduate seventh in her class of more than 300. With little time for relaxation, this new "Gator" will soon be off to Gainesville as a member of the freshmen class.
