What is the definition of actor exactly?

The first recorded case of acting happened in 534BC when the Greek performer Thespis stepped onto the stage. He was the first person to speak words as a character in a play. Well, acting's come a long way since then! As an actor, you could appear in movies, television, or live theatre. You might also sing, dance, or work as a voice-over artist. At Barbizon , you will learn all of the tools needed to be the best actor or actress you can be.

Here are just a few things you will learn:

•  Improvisation
Learn how to act out a scene without using a script. We will teach you how to be in the moment and relate to your fellow actors.

•  Focusing & Connecting to a Character
Are you a computer nerd? Enthusiastic cheerleader? Extreme tastes in clothing and hairstyles? Not a problem. Learn how to apply these personality traits to your performance and use them to your advantage to make the character you are portraying come alive.

•  Sense Memory
Think of how your mother's chocolate chip cookies smell while they're baking is an example of relating a sense to a particular memory. You will learn how to use your five senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound to trigger emotion in yourself.

•  How to Understand a Scene
You'll explore the "Who" (who is the character you are playing), the "Where" (where does the scene take place), and the "What" (what does the character want at that moment) that makes your acting real.

•  Monologues
This is the key to every actor's tool box. We'll help you prepare monologues that can land roles.

•  Personalization
Learn how to use your personal feelings (for example: fear) and experiences (for example: starting your first job) and apply them to your performance.

•  Cold Reading
Got 5 minutes? That's all the time you'll need when we teach you to memorize scripts and perform them in front of casting directors.

•  Interviewing Techniques
Now that you have all the skills an actor really needs, learn the proper way to interview with casting directors to land that perfect part.

Barbizon 's Acting Program can also help you in school & in life!
